By the way, Victoria is not only a champion fitness bikini competitor on the stage but also a top personal physical trainer and a professional horse trainer. A circus performer her whole life in Russia, Europe, Asia and the USA, she is one of the most intriguing women I know. Victoria Kirsanova!

I have a confession to make... I spend my life in the company of beautiful women, photographing them. Yes I do, don't hate me for it.

Among the beautiful, Maria Yvonne Bertrand. A model who has travelled the world being photographed for the most prestigious magazines and fashion houses. She has also been seen in many a movie opposite some of the biggest stars.

Spending more time as a fitness consultant you might see Maria tomorrow walking around the Los Angeles FitExpo. You might even see her with me some of the time. Told you, that's my life!

It is such a small word! I first met this beautiful young model on this photo shoot and needless to say she was very impressive. Her name is Emma Baker.

Flash forward and Emma is a working professional model and featured in the beautiful fashions of the now very successful Lauren-Elaine Designs. What is interesting is that Lauren at one time did a national ad shoot with me in her time as a model. Lauren is also herself an exceptionally beautiful woman! I love seeing it when people I know become successful! It makes life so very fun!

Amy is my hero! She has been, going back to when I first selected her as an Iron Man Magazine BodySpace Physique of the Month. Actually before that because she was one of the most admired and enthusiastic people in the BodySpace community on Bodybuilding.com.

To start out, she is the Mom of 6 and a Grandma! She went from very not fit to fit. When she did her photo shoot with me for the feature, I learned what gracious and kind person she truly is. She overcame quite a lot in her life and wen on to stand on stage at the National level USA NPC competition in 2010! A truly great person who knows that lifting works! Amy Sedlatschek, a friend to huge numbers of people on BodySpace as AmySuds!

No I was not the photographer for this ad... LOL! I doubt that many of you remember ads like this. As kids we would see these in the back pages of comic books. This one is coincidently from 1962, the same year I started lifting weights. Yes... 50 years ago!

Other 1962 milestones in the world of bodybuilding... It was the year that Arnold says he started lifting seriously at the age of 15. It was the year former Mr. Olympia Dorian Yates was born. And it was the year Olympia legend Lenda Murray was born. Wow! Too fun! And I am still lifting big!

It is starting! I can tell from all the phone calls and e-mails I am getting from competitors getting ready, scheduling photo shoots with me and kicking it up into high gear! The year of bodybuilding and fitness shows is on the way. The Los Angeles FitExpo is only 10 days from today and then the Arnold is around the corner. Very exciting!

Makes me smile and laugh! IFBB Professional Bodybuilder Tina Chandler in an out-take during our photo shoot. So often when we do photo shoots in the gym we typically go for the almost erotic. But this photo reminds me of why so very many of us go to the gym. We have fun! We love lifting weights, we love the environment being around other people who lift, we love the challenge!

And few represent rising to the challenge as much as Tina Chandler! You will see her soon again at the upcoming Arnold, Ms. International Competition in Columbus Ohio! Makes me smile!

Been Working On Facebook!

I have been absent from my own Blog here as I built up my Facebook page and following. I will say that it has been a successful endeavor. I have over 4500 friends, it has been noticed so much that I am being featured in Shutterbug Magazine in a feature about using social networking for professional photographers. And I received a note from a community college instructor of photography telling me that he uses my Facebook page as an example of how photographers can use Facebook also to build their business and following. Very Cool!

So I will be back to work here too, hopefully sharing interesting aspects of my photography. And be sure to check in on my Facebook page too! Thanks!

Muscle Beach This Weekend!

Summer starts at Muscle Beach in Venice California! The place where muscles were born!

Monday will be the big show opening with an Air Force fly-over! Bodybuilding, figure and bikini competitions take center stage along the boardwalk in the Sun, next to the sand and at the Pacific Ocean. On Saturday and Sunday you will also see Sumo Wrestling and Amateur Boxing. So be there, I will!

More Train Racing!

It was great fun doing a photo-shoot with Charles Johnathan Flanagan racing a freight train. In my shoots we do things for real. In the gym we lift heavy weights and if we are going to race a train, we race a train! Here is a behind the scenes photo to give you an idea. To the far right is Charles waiting for the train to get up with him to come out of the blocks!

He not only raced the train, he put on some distance and kept up right until he got about to my shooting position. Wow!

A guy who walks the walk. Carlos Ariss, owner of Power of Fitness Gyms in Palm Springs and Palm Desert California...

I photographed Carlos in his his gym right after he won his over 50 class overall at the very prestigious NPC "Cal". Carlos did the Cal as he turned 50 and 20 years after he last stood on the bodybuilding stage. A great guy who runs a great gym and is much more than just talk. He walks the walk! I AM NOT IN LONDON...

NOTE!

Sorry folks this morning my e-mail and facebook accounts were hacked. As some of you may know, me giving out a password or falling for some scam giving it out is something that would never happen. Nor would any phantom key-logging software get installed across my computers.

It looks to me at the moment that it was what is called a "brute force" attack across facebook. Sadly my facebook password was the same as my e-mail account. My facebook account is still down and I cannot access it, hopefully that may get corrected.

Facebook even has a special help section for this type of hack and money scam so apparently it happens often. Facebook is a great resource but also a target for those seeking to do bad in the world.

RECOMMENDATIONS!

Create a separate password for everything and do not make them simple, letters and numbers, capitals, symbols, mix it up.

Never give out info blindly online, NEVER!

Never download anything from an e-mail unless you are expecting it.

And finally...

Lets send more letters and cards in the good old mail! I like it and still write in pencil too!

The Los Angeles FitExpo... I Will Be There!

The Los Angeles FitExpo is this weekend, the 29th and 30th, at the Los Angeles Convention Center. Bodybuilding, MMA, Powerlifting and more events will be taking place along with 300 booths from sponsors.

I am especially proud to be there this year along with Def Leppard's Phil Collen following his feature story in the January 2011 issue in Iron Man Magazine which I both photographed and wrote.

Jack LaLanne Across Generations

My favorite encounter with Jack LaLanne was at the Los Angeles International Airport a few years ago. On my way to the Arnold Bodybuilding and Sports Festival in Columbus Ohio, may people waiting to board were people I personally know from the world of bodybuilding. And the joining us was Jack and his wife Elaine. Fresh off the bus from his home in Morro Bay 200 miles away, he was full of energy and excitement.

A flight delay gave Jack the chance to do what he truly seemed to love, meeting people and spreading his message. Never sitting down, he never stopped to greet and meet all ages in the terminal, take photos and talk about fitness and food. A pilot probably 50 years his junior recognized him and asked "Jack are you going to pull the plane out to the runway" recalling his many feats of strength in his life. Jack's message and fame had spread across many generations.

On Labor Day in 2007 at world famous Muscle Beach Venice, Jack LaLanne was inducted into the Muscle Beach Hall of Fame. I am proud to say that I am part of the Muscle Beach family of today and was there as usual.

Jack enthusiastically accepted his award and taking the microphone, this man well into his senior years, spoke clearly and loudly, joking and emphasizing profoundly his message of health, fitness and diet. His message again resounded clearly across the generations present and certainly showed his profound love of life.

Jack LaLanne was a pioneer in health and fitness. I remember watching him on television in the 1950's when my mother would watch his show. I remember being a member of his health clubs, one of the earliest chains of gyms. I remember his many feats of strength, like swimming with a line of boats tied to him. Actually a diminutive man in size, he was a giant of our lifetime.

Many of you will not know Jack LaLanne of the past. Take a moment to read up on the man and his message. You will be happy you did, The take his message to heart and spread it, you will help to make others better for it and we will all be better.

Def Leppard Phil Collen featured guest at the 2011 Los Angeles FitExpo!

Legendary Def Leppard lead guitarist and vocalist, Phil Collen will be at the Los Angeles FitExpo coming up on Saturday and Sunday, January 29th and 30th at the Los Angeles Convention Center.

I had the great honor and pleasure of photographing and writing a feature story about Phil which was just in the January 2011 issue of Iron Man Magazine, one of the most respected magazines in bodybuilding and fitness.

Phil along with world famous trainer Jean Carrillo will be doing demonstrations of his Muay Thai Kickboxing training along with his weight lifting and diet that keeps him in great shape year round, even during concert tours. It was many years ago that Phil gave up the stereotyped rock-star life a alcohol and bad eating for a life of health and fitness. A confirmed Vegetarian, Phil is a great guy with a great story and a great life to share.

Shooting My Way...

One of my favorite photos from a favorite series I shot on assignment for Iron Man Magazine and Bodybuilding.com...

The subject is Nick who was selected as an Iron Man Magazine BodySpace Physique of the Month. I both photographed and wrote this feature monthly for 3 years, many of them of course photographed in the gym.

However this time I decided to show the ripped body and tattoos of Nick out in the desert landscape. Sadly for Nick it was freezing cold that day but at least it had stopped raining! Nick braved it through and had much fun despite his teeth chattering through much of it.

The other thing I decided to do was to shoot medium format film. With almost everything we see anymore shot on digital, I wanted to give the photos a different look and in my mind this setting and idea translated very well to film.

The Extra Effort On Both Sides Of The Camera...

Of course I do a lot of photography in the bodybuilding and fitness industry. You see my photographs and features in the magazines all the time. It marries two of my favorite things and two things I know a great deal all about, working out in the gym and photography.

This photo of Xavisus Gayden from a photo shoot we did for Bodybuilding.com and Iron Man Magazine exemplifies, for me, photography and pushing iron in the gym...

In the gym, you are always challenging yourself. Not against the guy next to you, but against those iron plates hanging on each end of the bar. Sometimes it is not pretty, sometimes it is not perfect, but you push and next time that heavy weight yields to the next heavier weight and a sense of accomplishment that you have done your best.

Much of my favorite photography is not necessarily posed but does show people at their best in one way or another. The best in character during trying hard or maybe in a vulnerable moment, perhaps in a time of happiness or sadness. But always in a time of being human and special and unique to their own person. The candid moments are very true and fun!

However don't forget that I am really good at shooting the beautiful posed times too!

A Favorite "Ab" Photo...

"Ab" as in abdominal muscles and these belong to bodybuilder Steve Chen. Deep cut and thick abs, and with the lighting just how I envisioned, made for a photo, as a photographer with a specialty in bodybuilding and fitness, that was just perfect.

Of course Steve had something to do with the great photo, having built a superb physique that made for a great shoot with him as an Iron Man Magazine BodySpace Physique of the Month.

Silvio Samuel, One Of My Favorite Bodybuilders...

Silvio became an IFBB Pro Bodybuilder in 2006 and in 2007 moved to the USA where I first photographed him at the Koloseum Gym in Fullerton California.

At the time Silvio and IFBB Pro Hidetada Yamagishi were being trained by Milos Sarcev and subsequently started moving up the ranks of success and popularity. It has been fun following their careers and seeing them both make it to the Olympia stage. I will post a favorite photo of "Hide" soon too.

My model here is amateur figure competitor, Sharon Lim, who was shooting with me all the way from Singapore. I created a photo story around her that we shot over a big part of two days. We had much fun and I will be finished weaving it together soon. So watch for it!

WOW! Phil Collen of Def Leppard at FitExpo and in Iron Man Magazine!

Phil Collen, the legendary guitarist and vocalist of Def Leppard will be at the Los Angeles FitExpo at the Los Angeles Convention Center on January 29th and 30th 2011!

Phil is a fitness fanatic, weight lifter and Muay Thai Kickboxer. He will be doing kickboxing demos with his world famous trainer Jean Carillo as well as meeting and talking with fans at the FitExpo. Phil and Jean want to bring health, fitness and nutrition ideas to people to take home and start sharing to fight the epidemic of childhood obesity and change the lives of kids, and their parents, everywhere! This is the kickoff event for Phil to bring his message across the country and around the world!

When I photographed and interviewed Phil for his upcoming feature in Iron Man Magazine, I had it in the back of my mind to get him to the FitExpo. And then Phil's enthusiasm brought him out to Muscle Beach over the Summer for the July 4th Muscle Beach show...

Well one thing has lead to another and what I had envisioned has come to pass. There are a lot more details to come about what Phil and Jean will have going on at the FitExpo but keep checking back! And this is a big point! This is a kickoff event for Phil to take his message out there to really start us doing something about childhood obesity. We are killing our kids people and it is costing us all in so many ways. Let's be a part of Phil getting the message across and out!

And Phil's big feature story is in the January 2011 issue of Iron Man Magazine available everywhere on December 4th just a couple of weeks away!

The Joy of Lifting and the Business of Muscles!

For 3 years I have photographed and written the story of individuals who are members of the online community called BodySpace, now numbering over 660,000 like minded people interested in health and fitness.

The feature appears in the print edition of Iron Man Magazine and as well online at IronManMagazine.com and BodyBuilding.com as the Iron Man Magazine BodySpace Physique of the Month.

This last month's issue featured Kelechi Opara. An enthusiastic bodybuilder and fitness enthusiast, like so many, Kelechi was hoping to make his avocation his career. Among the people I have featured, a number have gone on to some success in the fitness business and more, and now that includes Kelechi.

Appearing in a number of magazines now, Kelechi has even been picked up for sponsorship by Optimum Nutrition, a premier nutritional products company. It makes me very proud to know that I was part of another person in our community of health and fitness getting ahead in the business.

I do love shooting outdoors. Although I often shoot in studio settings or created studio settings as I just did for "Private Clubs Magazine" photographing the Executive Chef at the Indian Wells Country Club, my mind will usually run with the idea of getting outside and using all types of scenery.

Such was my choice for my recent photo shoot with fitness models Dena Ann Weiner and Sherry Goggin. So I hope you like the scenery I selected and a couple of examples of the scenery the girls provided!

Hints For Shooting You Own Great Photos At The Olympia!

Many of you have been asking how to take better for yourself at the Olympia and at other shows. Now you probably won;t be taking in all of the professional gear and long lenses I will that does not mean you can't take some fun photos!

First don’t think that you have to shoot a close up frame filling photo of the competitors. A lot of interesting photos are going to be wider views of the stage and even what is going on around you from the crowd to the arena. Also just the people going in and out, waiting out front, any number of things. It can be a lot of fun.

If you are shooting with just a small personal camera, turn off the flash if you are trying to shoot the stage. Flash only carries a few feet and with it on, your camera will expose accordingly and you will have good photos of the bald heads a few rows in front of you. Turn off the flash and use a higher “iso” for low light and hold your camera really still.

Shooting with a more advanced camera and a longer lens will give you more options. If you have the choice, shoot in “RAW” format. You will be able to make more adjustments afterward to get a better picture. You will want to adjust your white balance later to get your skin tones right and that will actually make it look like you have better focus too. Use a higher “iso” above 800 and the newer cameras are good up to 1600 and more. You will be able to use a higher shutter speed so less camera shake and a sharper photo. Try to get your shutter speed over a 250th. And no flash, you will be exposing for the stage lighting.

After you shoot some, get back to me and I will help you out with some post processing tips. But be creative, look around at what is there and take photos, you will be happy you did!

Better Gym Photos and More...

Over the years I have received plenty of e-mails from photographers asking for hints about how to shoot better photos in the gym. There are tons of photographers out there photographing bodybuilding and fitness people and to be truthful, I really do think much of it ranges from bad to abysmal. Sadly it is also the fault of the model and the audience because they really don't know what a good photo looks like. It has been a dumbing down. The magazines and websites very often accept it too, because it is cheap or free.

But to answer the questions I get about improving gym shooting and more, for starters here is a photo I shot that I consider right on. First you have to start out with the right person in the photograph and the right person here is my good friend and fitness fabulous Amy. You can't argue about Amy's devotion to fitness, she is a Mom of 6 and a Grandma!

First things first, you have to shoot a good photo to begin with then no overly heavy handed fakery in "photoshop". The fitness world, especially when it has come to women, has been following an over-processed "photoshop" look of heavily blurred and smoothed skin that is so obviously fake as to be the joke of photography.

Some quick good practice steps...

1. Good makeup and hair, very few models can do this for photography, it is different than going out on a Saturday night. Find yourself a makeup artist and hairstylist and use him or her on every shoot with a woman.

2. No over done stupid glamour poses. I always call it the "back end in the air, elbows in the sand" look. Boring and amateur. Look at posing in magazines like Vogue, Vanity Fair, Flaunt and others, especially the European versions. You will see much more interesting and creative work.

3. Lighting, learn it. Yes you can shoot with just your flash on the camera, but to get that to look right is even more difficult than complex studio lighting. So learn and experiment.

4. Wardrobe... You might think a g-string in the gym with boots is cool but to make that look good is going to take some real posing techniques and some smart modeling beyond what most subjects can pull off. Go with good and a little sexy gym clothes on the girls and basics on guys. Work on shooting good photos first.

5. Tanning... Competition tanning looks too odd in the gym or anywhere off stage. A darker than normal tan is good. NO BABY OIL. An amateur mistake. Just a slight spray of water in the gym can get the job done. Glycerin and water is also a good choice. Your MUA can help you with that.

6. Slow down and focus! And get your "white balance" right. And then slow down and focus! Did I say slow down and focus?

Muscle Beach Championship on Labor Day 2010

The last competition of the Summer at world famous Muscle Beach on Labor Day was the Muscle Beach Championship. A bright sunny day at Venice Beach California started out with Arnold himself stopping by on his bike ride to look around and say Hi!

The day went on with lots of competitors working out in the "Pit" to get ready for the show, a lunch time hot dog eating contest, and of course, great bodies on stage for the bodybuilding, figure and bikini competitions. Take a look!

However the very last photo in the series was created with a vintage Polaroid SX-70 instant camera and Polaroid TZ-Artistic film from The Impossible Project. It made for a very fun vintage look!

Dog Training.... In The Gym!

I have photographed my share of ads but this is one of my favorite ad shoots of all time...

These ads ran in all of the magazines over a long time. This is Olympia trainer to the top bodybuilders of the world, Charles Glass, training a dog in the gym.

Now for a little behind the scenes story; The original idea was for Charles to train a cat and just on the treadmill. I suggested that a cat might be difficult and that a dog was a better idea. So it was agreed to go with a dog. And because one of the owners of BodyBuilding.com loved English Bulldogs, we decided to go with an English Bulldog.

So I needed an English Bulldog that would run on a treadmill and "lift" weights, my idea. And I needed a gym that would be completely empty for the shoot for other reasons that you will see in another blog post later.

I found the dog, actually a veteran of many television commercials, and a gym that I could have on the Sunday of a Thanksgiving weekend. And it all came together.

There are approximately 300 photos from that day and all together they are as funny as you can imagine, very LOL! Charles and the dog were best friends immediately and it became the photo shoot of a lifetime. Soon I will post a slideshow of the day, so...

A course has been laid out to swim as much as 120 miles with the world record currently at 75 nautical miles in New Zealand last year.

Craig Baskin's original painting "H2O Unity" will be the center piece for promoting and fund raising for the swim. The painting, photographed by me will be used for event t-shirts and promotionals.

Fundraising also supports The Wounded Warrior Project and Por Ellas in the fight against Cancer.

So check it out and it all looks like great fun for a great purpose and the photo of Craig's painting will be a nifty T-Shirt; and it will be available on the MAUS website in a few weeks.

Hiking In Apple Country

Got to get out of the gym, life is more than lifting heavy iron! So over the weekend it was up to Oak Glen in the San Bernardino Mountains. First stop among the many apple and fruit orchards was Apple Annie's at Oak Tree Village for some food.

Oak Tree Village is a little old Western theme stop with shops, restaurants and even a gun fight show.

I did find my photo competition right in the middle of the town complete with a hot model right out front, although perhaps a little overdressed for my usual photography.

Time to get out and do some hiking so it was down the road to the Oak Glen Preserve. My usual favorite hiking weather (or any weather for me), it was probably 90 degrees and certainly more than sunny.

An easy and well marked trail was surrounded by beautiful scenery that made for slowing down, taking in the view and shooting some casual photos.

The trail did start to take a downhill slope that was pretty continuous for a while. And out in the open you could see the burned landscape and trees from the Oak Glen fire which burned over 1000 acres just about one year ago.

As I had expected from the downhill part of the hike, there was an uphill! Pretty substantial too that made the treadmill in the gym seem very inadequate! I worked up a good sweat and certainly got that heart beating. Great fun!

Like I have been saying on my other Blog, get on out and do more than just lift, the gym can get a little tired sometimes.

Salton Sea And Salvation Mountain

I continually find Salton Sea a truly fascinating place. A saline lake on what once was the Gulf of Mexico, it is 15 miles wide by 35 miles long and 226 feet below sea level. There was a time when it was a recreational destination that rivaled any other in the country. But fell out of favor and into the past.

It is a locale for many movie and television productions as well as photo shoots. On this day for me, it was a sight seeing and hiking day. And in 100 degree heat it made a fun walk, I love it! And that is not sand on the shore but finely crushed sea shell from millions of years of prior geology.

Something very new, but old, at Salton Sea is the Yacht Club. Originally designed by famed modernist architect, Albert Frey, it had fallen into horrible tear down condition. But now completely rebuilt and retaining it's original look, it serves as a museum and community center.

That is just a small part of Salton Sea up on the North Shore, there is much more! Here is a photo I shot a couple of years ago down at Bombay Beach further South on the Sea.

From Salton Sea it was off to nearby Niland and the home of Salvation Mountain...

Whether you have any religious affiliation or not, Salvation Mountain is a breathtaking sight to behold in the middle of nowhere. Fifty feet high and 150 feet long, it is constantly growing by Leonard, it's sole creator and builder.

Obviously devoted to his religious beliefs, Leonard is a slight man who lives on the property in various vehicles without running water or electricity or any basic utilities.

Constructed from cast off materials, donated paints and such, Salvation Mountain is not only a curious sight but also practical. For example, the bales of hay are amazingly insulating, resulting in interior temperatures that must be at least 20 degrees or more cooler than out in the open.

Salvation Mountain has also appeared in productions as well as documentaries including National Geographic. I am happy I got to see it and have had the opportunity to meet Leonard.

Back At It!

I took a few months off from posting on my two Blogs as I noted in my prior post. But back to it now! My other Blog on the BodySpace community on BodyBuilding.com is the 7th most popular among over 600,000 members! It is however primarily devoted to the bodybuilding and fitness side of my photography.

So to broaden things out and devote more to the other facets of my photography, I will be spending some more time posting here too! So be sure to keep checking back and let me know what you are thinking. I am opening up my posts here to comments for the first time, hopefully the software will keep away the spam attacks.

Different than "Figure" competition, the women in this event seek the muscle definition and look of power seldom seen in the "fairer" sex.

Actually I was the very first photographer to be credentialed by the Olympia for BodyBuilding.com to shoot the Olympia just a few years ago. BodyBuilding.com since then has grown so fast and has done so very much for the industry in such a brief time that it is truly amazing. It is now without question the largest bodybuilding and fitness resource in the world.

Anyway one of my favorites was 2007, I really liked the photos that came out of that show…
